2018/2019 SEASON – END OF SEASON DEVELOPMENT REPORT

INTRODUCTION

At the 2018 AGM the Club agreed to continue a Development Programme for the 2018/2019 season. There was, however, some concern within the Club that the Development Teams have outgrown their intended remit. Originally, the Development Teams were put in place to give players the opportunity to experience Curling outside the Club in external competition. Up until now the Development Teams have successfully fulfilled that remit. It was proposed to change the Development Programme Structure and introduce 2 Fixed Rinks run through the Development Programme as well as the 2 rotating Development Rinks would take the total number of Club Fixed Rinks from 3 to 5 and would provide greater access to Fixed Rink Team Training and a development path through the Club to the Kirkcudbright ‘A’ Rinks.

The Development Programme Structure was changed to meet the addition Fixed Rink requirement and this document provides the End of Season Development Programme Report.

Last Seasons figures are shown in brackets to provide a comparison, where appropriate.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The Club’s Goals and Objectives were:

  • Goals

    • Provide new / inexperienced members with the opportunity to participate in Inter-club competitions.

    • Provide inexperienced and new members with as many opportunities as possible to play competitive curling.

    • Provide two Development Fixed Rinks to provide a pathway through the Club from the rotating Development Rinks to Kirkcudbright “A” Rinks.

  • The Club Goals have been met with 164 (100) curling slots being made available for Club Members through the Development Rink participation in the DIBCA Wednesday Night League, and Over 50’s League.

  • It had been intended to have a Development Rink in the DIBCA SKINS League, however circumstances do not allow this.

  • The curling slots have been filled with a combination of experienced, developing, new and inexperienced members.

  • Objectives

    • Enter a Development Rink in the DIBCA Wednesday Night League, Seniors League and the DIBCA SKINS League to provide new / inexperienced / developing club members with the opportunity to compete in inter-club Competitions.

    • Enter a Development Fixed Rink in the DIBCA Wednesday Night League to provide a progression pathway to the Club “A” Rinks.

    • Enter a Development Fixed Rink in the DIBCA Seniors League to provide a progression pathway to the Club “A” Rinks.

  • The objectives have been met as both a Development Rink and a Development Fixed Rink were entered in the DIBCA Wednesday Night League and the DIBCA Seniors League.

  • The DIBCA SKINS League objective was not met due to constant SKINS game re-arrangement and availability.

DIBCA Wednesday Night League – Division 3, Consisting of 10 Teams.

  • A Fixed Development Rink (Kirkcudbright B) was entered in League Division 3 of the Wednesday Night League. The Rink completed a total of 9 games, Wining Five, Peeling One and Losing Three. The Rink finished a very creditable 3rd in the League.

  • A Rotating Development Rink (Kirkcudbright C) was entered in League Division 3 of the Wednesday Night League. The Rink completed a total of 9 games, Wining Three and Losing Six. The Rink finished 8th in the League

  • A total of 72 (36) Curling slots were filled between the two rinks.

  • Participation in this League generated £ 792.00 (£320.00) in fees for the Dumfries Ice Bowl.

DIBCA Over 50’s League

  • A Fixed Development Rink (Kirkcudbright B) was entered in the Seniors League. The Rink completed a total of 11 games (including the qualification games). The Rink ended up in the Low Road after the qualification games where they Won Two, Peeled One and Lost Two. The Rink finished a creditable 4th in the Low Road.

  • A Rotating Development Rink (Kirkcudbright C) was entered in the Seniors League. The Rink completed a total of 12 games (including the qualification games). The Rink ended up in the High Road after the qualification games where they Won Two, Peeled One and Lost Three. The Rink finished a creditable 5th in the High Road.

  • A total of 92 (48) Curling slots were filled between the two rinks.

  • Participation in this League generated a further £ 828.00 (£400.00) in fees for the Dumfries Ice Bowl.

DIBCA SKINS League

  • It had been planned to enter a Development Rink (Kirkcudbright B) in DIBCA SKINS League. However, there were only four teams entered for the League and the matches were rearranged constantly due to availability. This made it difficult to use the competition for Development. A team was entered for the League, but the fixtures were fulfilled by 5 Club members and was not part of the Development Programme.

FEEDBACK

  • The addition of the Fixed Development Rinks was well received and should continue.

  • Development Teams Good

  • Perhaps the Fixed Development Rinks should stay together for 2 Seasons?

  • Fixed Rinks a good idea gave access to Fixed Rink Training – which was good.

  • Should we just have one Fixed Development Rink in each Competition - if we have enough volunteers should we enter more than one Fixed Development Rink?

  • Having an experienced Skip in the Rotating Rinks worked well.

CONCLUSION

  • The Development Programme was overall seen as successful and well managed.

  • The Number of Fixed Development Rinks should be kept under review.

  • If you commit to a Development Fixed Rink, then you should be prepared to go Rink Training.

  • Fixed Development Rinks should stay together for two seasons.

  • An Experienced Skip should be used in each Rotating Development Rink.

  • The Development Programme should continue for next season.

  • The Development Programme generated a total of £1620.00 (£720.00) in fees for Dumfries Ice Bowl.
